Okay… this one feels a little surreal.
We’ve just been named one of The Wed’s 33 Best Wedding Photographers Around the World.
Thirty-three photographers from around the world, and somehow, we’re one of them. What?!

For a little Melbourne wedding photography studio that started on April Fools’ Day in 2016, this is a pretty special thing to wake up to.
We started Emotions and Math because we loved photographs, but also everything around photographs.
The colours.
The clothes.
The weird little details nobody else seems to notice.
The architecture.
The flowers doing something slightly unexpected.
The friend crying in the corner while pretending they absolutely are not crying.
The grandmother watching the dance floor.
Someone fixing the bride’s veil with the concentration of a surgeon.
And the completely unplanned moment that somehow becomes one of our favourite photographs from the entire wedding.
All the little things that make a wedding feel like your wedding.
That has always been the heart of Emotions and Math.
We’re not particularly interested in making every wedding look the same. We want each wedding to feel like itself.
Our approach sits somewhere between documentary wedding photography and editorial photography. We want photographs that feel alive and honest, but we also really, really love a good frame.
Beautiful light, obviously.
But also bad light used in a good way.
Movement.
A strange crop.
The bit of a dress disappearing out of frame.
A photograph where you can almost hear what was happening.
We’re usually trying to be that professional wallflower who somehow ends up in the right place at exactly the right moment.
But we also love a little direction when it feels right. A little movement. A fashion moment. A slightly ridiculous idea. Something that makes you look at the photograph and think, oh, that is SO them.
Because wedding photography doesn’t have to choose between real and beautiful.
We want both.
The photograph where you’re laughing so hard your face completely changes.
And the one where you look like you accidentally walked into a fashion campaign.
The perfectly composed table setting.
And the half-eaten canapé sitting next to it.
The grand entrance.
And someone fixing their shoe underneath the table.
Basically, we want the whole weird, beautiful, emotional, hilarious thing.
A little Melbourne studio that somehow made it around the world
Being included among 33 wedding photographers from around the world means a lot to us, especially because we’ve always believed that good wedding photography can come from anywhere.
We’re based in Melbourne, Australia, but our weddings have taken us all over the place.
And every time we travel, we’re reminded that the best part of this job isn’t actually the destination.
It’s the people.
A beautiful venue is great.
An incredible dress is great.
An amazing tablescape is VERY great.
But give us two people completely obsessed with each other, a room full of their favourite people, some questionable dance moves and a little bit of chaos…
…and we’re very happy.
The Wed described our work as bringing together dreamy tones, editorial framing and an instinct for the smaller gestures that can say more than the grand ones, while keeping warmth, humour and connection running through the photographs.
That last part means a lot to us.
Because underneath all the cameras, lenses, film, digital files, moodboards, outfits and carefully considered frames…
we really just care about people.
We care about how it felt.
The things you might not remember happened.
The people who were there.
And making photographs that still make you feel something years later.
So… thank you.
To every couple who has trusted us with their wedding.
To the families who have hugged us.
To the friends who have dragged us onto the dance floor.
To the couples who have said, “We trust you, do whatever you want.”
To the design-obsessed ones who send us a 47-page moodboard.
To the ones who bring three outfits.
To the ones who bring seven.
And to the ones who say, “We’re not really photo people,” and then proceed to give us some of our favourite photographs ever.

So yes, apparently we’re now one of The Wed’s 33 Best Wedding Photographers Around the World.
We’re going to sit with that for a minute.
Maybe two.
Okay, probably quite a few.
Then we’ll get back to doing what we’ve always done:
looking for the weird little moments, making photographs that feel like people, and trying to make every wedding a little bit more Emotions and Math.
Still slightly speechless.
But very, very grateful.
